Early Childhood Education

To improve as a teacher you need to do two things. The first is teach. Only through hands on practical experience with children can you develop your skills as an educators. The second is to back up your approach, style and the why you do what you do by keeping up with relevant literature and research. Below you will find a list of books  that have helped our practice and understanding of Early Childhood Education.

Working in the Reggio Way ****

BY JULIANNE WRUM

WorkinInTheReggioWay.jpg

Greg Bottrill's book is a fantastic read for anyone interested in Early Years Education from ECE practitioners to parents who want to know what happens and what should happen in a classroom for young children. In the book the author explores and defines what play is and how it develops. My favourite part is how he unpicks those habitats teachers can automatically fall into with regards to classroom set up, decorations, displays and organization. You can find this book on Amazon and available on Kindle for those international teachers who find it difficult to get books related to ECE.

Favourite Quote: "you cannot access the real world of children if you cannot or are unwilling to do this. All too often we see teachers entering the profession with personal ambition or with the lack of integrity to stop for one moment and question or challenge what it is we are doing with children day in and day out" (p. 8)

Teacher Tom's First Book *****

BY TOM HOBSON

teacher-tom-front-cover.jpg

This is one of those books that is very easy to read because you feel like you are having a conversation with someone rather than just learning something. Bryce-Clegg's books is both entertaining and educational that explains the what, why and how of what ECE teachers do. My favourite aspect of this book is how the author highlights those mistakes that we (ECE teachers) can often fall into when teaching that become more about product than process.

Favourite Quote: "However small or inconvenient your space may be, how it looks and is organized should bear a direct relationship to the strengths and areas of development that you have identified through regular assessment. The needs of children change over time as they grow and develop, and so should the space that you create for them" (p. 442 kindle)

Bringing the Reggio Approach to your Early Years Practice ****

BY LINDA THORNTON & PAT BRUNTON

This is a good book if you are looking to incorporate Reggio based practices into your classroom/school/centre. The best aspect of this book are the questions it offers at the end of each section. These questions are really helpful to reflect on your own teaching practice or to guide in house professional development.

Theories & Approaches to Learning in the Early Years ****

BY LINDA MILLER & LINDA POUND

If you have just got into ECE or are curious about the different types of approaches to ECE then this book is for you. I read it as part of my MA in Early Childhood Education and it outlines all the major approaches including Montessori, Reggio, High Scope etc. What is great about this book is that with each approach it includes strengths and criticisms.

Favourite Quote: "Challenge your own views and beliefs and to help you to 'know what you don't know'..."
